Patient Collection Instructions:

Fasting Blood Sample Preparation:  Prior to obtaining a fasting blood sample, do not eat or drink for 10-12 hours; water is allowed. Examples of tests that require fasting are lipid panels (which test for cholesterol levels), glucose (blood sugar) tests, and metabolic panels.

For the following tests, please pick up a collection container from one of our Lab locations.

Routine Urine Collection:  The first morning voided urine is the best sample.  Clean the skin area with soap solution by using soap and water on a wash cloth or towelettes.  Discard the first few drops of urine and then collect specimen in the container provided by the Lab.

Stool Cultures:  Collect stool specimen in container provided by Lab.  Return the specimen to the Lab within one hour after collection.  If more than one specimen is ordered, the specimens need to be collected at least 24 hours apart.  Do not refrigerate. Specimen is unacceptable if contaminated with water or urine.

Stool Specimens including:  stool culture - occult blood - fecal WBC - ova and parasites - clostridium difficile

Can be obtained from the SAME single specimen with NO DIETARY RESTRICTIONS.

Collect in a CLEAN, DRY container: LABEL with patient name, birth date, collection date and time

Return to the Laboratory: Culture MUST be returned within 1 hour - Ova and Parasites within 24 hours - Occult Blood within 24 hours - Fecal WBC within 24 hours - C. difficile within 4-6 hours, otherwise must be refrigerated

Specimens are rejected if contaminated with urine or water.

24 hour Urine Collection:  On the morning of the test, begin by discarding the first specimen of the day in the toilet.  Collect every specimen until and including the morning specimen of the next day.  Timing and volume are critical.  Collect all voided urine within the appropriate time intervals. Urine should be refrigerated during collection time. You must pick up your container from Lab before beginning collection.
