Cardiothoracic Surgeon Subrato Deb Joins WMHS Medical Staff
Thoracic surgery focuses on treatment of diseases in the lungs, esophagus, chest wall, stomach and other organs inside the rib cage. In traditional thoracic surgery, a large incision is made on the side and in between the ribs which are spread open to reach the diseased tissue. This incision is painful and can be disabling. Minimally invasive surgery, also known as video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), enables the surgeon to perform the operation through several small incisions without rib spreading. The benefits of minimally invasive surgery for patients are less pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery time. Dr. Deb did his residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. A graduate of the University Of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Deb completed his internship and residency in general surgery at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. Dr. Deb was on active duty with the U. S. Navy for the past 16 years and is now in the U.S. Navy Reserves.
