Values in Action Spirit Award Recipient for June - Kelly Winterberg

An employee since 1991, Kelly was selected as the Western Maryland Health System’s Values in Action Spirit Award recipient for the month of June. Kelly is a mamographer in the Radiology Department who works in the Outpatient Diagnostic Center at Braddock. She was a member of the first class to graduate from the new Radiology Technologist program at Allegany College of Maryland.

Kelly began her career as a radiology technologist at Memorial and worked there until 2005 when she became a certified mamographer and moved to the Braddock campus with opening of the Outpatient Diagnostic Center. In addition to mammography, she also does Dexa-scan osteoporosis screening and other outpatient radiology procedures as needed.

Kelly is an outstanding employee who loves working with her patients and talking them through a mammogram. “I like to make them feel comfortable and put them at ease,” says Kelly. “Patients are sometimes a little apprehensive when they come in for a test, so I try to talk them through it and take their mind off the procedure.”

Kelly was nominated for the award by a patient who took the time to single her out for recognition. The patient said Kelly remembered her name and situation, and made sure she was comfortable and ready to start. “She explained everything very well and promptly completed the exam.” According to the patient’s nomination, “throughout the whole experience, Kelly was warm, friendly and caring.”

Kelly is known for her compassion and thoughtfulness as a caregiver, always willing to do whatever it takes make her patients feel welcome. Kelly says the staff is like one big, close-knit family and they work very well together. She is well-liked by her colleagues and is more than willing to help out in a pinch. Co-workers describe her as courteous, personable, kind, dependable and very gentle.

Kelly and her husband, Shawn, reside in LaVale and have been married for 17 years. They have two children – daughter Lauren is a freshman at Allegany High School and son Brett is in the fourth grade at Cash Valley Elementary School.

The Winterberg family enjoys following their children’s school and sporting activities, like baseball, soccer and cheerleading. Kelly serves as the president of the Cash Valley Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and volunteers for a variety of activities to support her children. The family also enjoys biking on the new Allegheny Highlands Trail, which is close to their home.

Congratulations, Kelly!
